Saturday Fun

The Observatory announced this morning that temperatures have dropped to slightly above 10 degrees Centigrade in urban areas but that in parts of the New Territories, the overnight temperatures were just slightly above freezing point! Certainly not a good time to have fun outside. But what is there to stop us from having some fun inside. I have been much engaged in trying to understand Islam in the past week. I was just wondering if Muslims have a sense of humor. After browsing around in the internet, I am in absolutely no doubt that they are just like you and me. The proof?

1.

A man is taking a walk in Central park in New York.
Suddenly he sees a little girl being attacked by a pit bull dog . He runs over
and starts fighting with the dog. He succeeds in killing the dog and saving the
girl's life.

A policeman who was watching the scene walks over and says:
"You are a hero, tomorrow you can read it in all the newspapers:
"Brave New Yorker saves the life of little girl"

The man says: -
"But I am not a New Yorker!"

"Oh ,then it will say in newspapers
in the morning: 'Brave American saves life of little girl'" – the
policeman answers.

"But I am not an American!" – says the man.

"Oh, what are you then? "

The man says: - "I am a Saudi !"

The next day the newspapers says: "Islamic extremist kills innocent
American dog."

2.

Here is the story of an Imam who got up after Friday
prayers and announced to the people:

"I have good news and bad news. The good news is, we
have enough money to pay for our new building program. "

One of the anxious faithful asked, "Imam, what then is the bad news?"

The Imam replied, "That the money is still out there in your pockets."

3.

An Imam shocked his community when he announced that he
was resigning from that particular Masjid and would be moving to a drier climate.

After
the session, a very distraught lady came to the Imam with tears in her eyes,
"Oh, Imam, we are going to miss you so much. We don't want you to
leave!"

The kind hearted Imam said "Now, now, sister, don't carry on.
The Imam who takes my place might be even better than me".

"Yeah", she said, with a tone of disappointment
in her voice, "That's what they said the last time too . . . "

4.

Nasruddin was determined to be decisive and efficient.  Hee told his wife he would plow his largest field on the far side of the
river and be back for a big dinner. She urged him to say, "If Allah is
willing."

He told her whether Allah was willing or not, that was
his plan. The frightened wife looked up to Allah and asked forgiveness.

Nasruddin loaded his wooden plow, hitched up the oxen to
the wagon, climbed on his donkey and set off.

But the next day, the river flooded after a sudden cloudburst, washed his donkey downstream and broke an ox's leg
right in the mud and Nasruddin had to hitch himself in its place to plow the field.

After finishing only half the field, he set
out for home at sunset, exhausted and soaking wet. But the river was still high. So he had to
wait until it was completely dark before he could cross over.

After midnight a very wet but much wiser Nasruddin
knocked at his door.

"Who is there?" asked his wife.

"I think it is me, Nasruddin," he replied, "if Allah is
willing!"

5.

Once, the people of the city invited Mulla Nasruddin to
deliver a speech.

When he got on the minbar (pulpit), he found the audience was
not very enthusiastic, so he asked "Do you know what I am going to
say?"

The audience replied "NO". So he announced "I have no
desire to speak to people who don't even know what I will be talking
about" and he left.

The people felt embarrassed and called him back again
the next day.

This time when he asked the same question, the people replied
"YES".  So Mullah Nasruddin said, "Well, since you already know
what I am going to say, I won't waste any more of your time" and he left.

Now the people were really perplexed. They decided to try one more time and
once again invited the Mullah to speak the following week.

Once again he asked
the same question - "Do you know what I am going to say?"

Now the
people were prepared and so half of them answered "YES" while the
other half replied "NO". So Mullah Nasruddin said "The half who
know what I am going to say, tell it to the other half" and he left!

6.

"When I was in the desert," said Nasruddin one
day, "I caused an entire tribe of horrible and bloodthirsty bedouins to
run."

"However did you do it?" asked his listener.

"Easy. I just ran, and they ran after me."

Have a nice weekend, if Allah is willing!

A Few Common Misconceptions About Islam.3 Jihad

Cont'd

To lots of people, the first images which surface in their mind whenever Islam is mentioned is the bearded figure of Khomeni or, the turbaned figure of Taliban,  the Al Queda and numerous acts of terrorism and especially the spectacular collapses of the two towers of the World Trade Centre in 9/11. They are all supposed to be connected in one way or another with what they believe to the Islamic concept of a "jihad" or"holy war". How much truth is there in such a conception. Let's find out.

What is a "jihad"?  According to About Islam. com, the word "jihad" comes from the Arabic root word "J-H-D" which literally means "strive" although there are other words of the same root like "effort", "labor" and "fatigue". It refers to a struggle to overcome obstacles in the quest for spirituality, to become whole and holy. What does the Qu'ran have to say about this subject? "David killed Goliath and God gave him kingship and wisdom, and imparted to him the knowledge of whatever He willed. Had it not been for God's repelling some people by means of others, the earth would have been filled with corruption. But God is bountiful to his creatures". (Qu'ran 2: 251). So war was a way God had of correcting the corruption of one people by the justice of another.

In a passage which seems to condone the use of violence, the Qur'an lays down the conditions for doing so "And fight in God's cause against those who wage war against you, but do not commit aggression--for surely, God does not love aggressors". (Qu'ran 2: 190). It is clear that war is justified only if it is defensive, not aggressive. He expressly prohibits aggression because that is something that God does not like. What about the passage in the Qur'an that appear to condone "killing the infidel"? This is their official reply: "The Qur'an commands Muslims to stick up for themselves in a defensive battle -- i.e. if an enemy army attacks, then Muslims are to fight against that army until they stop their aggression. All of the verses that speak about fighting/war in the Qur'an are in this context. There are some specific verses that are very often "snipped" out of context, either by critics of Islam discussing "jihadism"  or by misguided Muslims themselves who wish to justify their aggressive tactics e.g the verse (in its snipped version) reads: "slay them wherever you catch them" (Qur'an 2:191). But who is this referring to? Who are "they" that this verse discusses? The preceding and following verses give the correct context:"Fight in the cause of God those who fight you, but do not
transgress limits; for God loves not transgressors. And slay them wherever you catch them, and turn them out from where they have turned you out; for tumult
and oppression are worse than slaughter... But if they cease, God is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful... If they cease, let there be no hostility except to those who practice oppression" (2:190-193). It is clear from the context that these verses are discussing a defensive war, when a Muslim community is attacked without reason, oppressed and prevented from practicing their faith. In these circumstances, permission is given to fight back -- but even then Muslims are instructed not to transgress limits, and to cease fighting as soon as the attacker gives up and to fight directly only against those who are attacking them, not innocent bystanders or non-combattants."

Muhammad elaborates further : "Slay them wherever you find them ( ie.those who fight against you), drive them out of the places from which they drove you, for persecution is worse than killing. Do not fight them at the Sacred Mosque unless they fight you there. If they do fight you, slay them--such is the reward for those who deny the truth--but if they desist, then surely God is most merciful. Fight them until there is no more fitna and religion belongs to God alone. If they desist, then let there be no hostility, except towards aggressors." (Qu'ran 2 190-193).  It is clear from this passage that one is allowed to kill only to get back to the places which one occupies before having been attacked by one's enemies and once the enemy shows sign of yielding, then mercy should be shown to them. Even if the
attackers refuse to stop, still "no hostility" is counseled because violence is reserved only for "aggressors". Military action is advised only as a last resort. Islam never tolerates unprovoked aggression from its own side; Muslims are commanded in the Qur'an not to begin hostilities, embark on any act of aggression, violate the rights of others, or harm the innocent. Even hurting or destroying animals or trees is forbidden. War is waged only to defend the religious community against oppression and persecution, because the Qur'an says that "persecution is worse than slaughter" and "let there be no hostility except to those who practice oppression" (Qur'an 2:190-193). Therefore, if non-Muslims are peaceful or indifferent to Islam, there is no justified reason to declare war on them.

In still yet another passage, the Qu'ran says that those permitted to fight are "those who have been expelled from their homes/in defiance of right, for no cause except that they say, "Our Lord is Allah." Did not Allah check one set of people by means of another, there would surely have been pulled down monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques, in which the name of God is commemorated in abundant measure..." Qur'an 22:40. It is often thought that Muslims want to wage holy wars to spread its faith and to want to conquer the whole world by military force to compel non-Muslims to convert to Islam. Let's hear what Muhammad had to say about this. , "Let there be no compulsion in religion"  (Qur'an 2:256). To a true Muslim, that would be the very opposite of a holy war. What is the point or value about a belief in Allah if that is not truly based on man's free will?

In a third passage which seems to give permission to Muslims to use violence on non-Muslims e.g  the verse in Qur'an 9: 5 -- which in its snipped, out of context version could read: "fight and slay the pagans wherever ye find them, and seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem (of war)."  Islam's official position is this: "The preceding and following verses give the context: this verse was revealed during a historical period when the small Muslim community had entered into treaties with neighboring tribes (Jewish, Christian, and pagan). Several of the pagan tribes had violated the terms of their treaty, secretly aiding an
enemy attack against the Muslim community. The verse directly before this one instructs the Muslims to continue to honor treaties with anyone who has not
since betrayed them, because fulfilling agreements is considered a righteous action. Then the verse continues, that those who have violated the terms of the
treaty have declared war, so fight them... (as quoted above) and directly after this permission to fight, the same verse continues, "but if they repent, and establish regular prayers and practice regular charity, then open the way for them... for God is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful." The subsequent verses instruct the Muslims to grant asylum to any member of the pagan tribe/army who asks for it, and again reminds that "as long as these stand true to you, stand ye true to them: for God loves the righteous."

What is Islam's official position on terrorism? This is what About Islam. com says: "The entire Qur'an, taken as a complete text, gives a message of hope, faith, and peace to a faith community of one billion people. The overwhelming message is that peace is to be found through faith in God, and justice among fellow human beings. At the time the Qur'an was revealed (7th century A.D.), there was no United Nations or Amnesty International to keep the peace or expose injustice. Inter-tribal violence and vengeance was commonplace. As a matter of survival, one must have been willing to defend against aggression from all sides. Nevertheless, the Qur'an repeatedly urges forgiveness and restraint, and warns believers not to "transgress" or become "oppressors." "  They cite some samples of what Muhammad had to say to support their claim:

(a) "If anyone slays a person/ unless it be for murder or for spreading mischief in the  land/it would be as if he slew all people./And if anyone saves a life,it would be
as if he saved the life of all people." (Qur'an 5:32)

(b) " Invite all to the way of your Lord/with wisdom and beautiful preaching/And argue with them/in ways that are best and most gracious.../And if you punish,/let
your punishment be proportional/to the wrong that has been done to you./But if you show patience, that is indeed the best course/Be patient, for your patience
is from God./And do not grieve over them,/or distress yourself because of their plots./For God is with those who restrain themselves,/and those who do good."
       (Qur'an 16:125-128)

(c) "Oh you who believe!/Stand out firmly for justice, as witnesses to God/even against yourselves, or your parents, or your kin,/and whether it be against rich or
poor/for God can best protect both./Follow not the cravings of your hearts, lest you swerve,/and if you distort justice or decline to do justice,/verily God is well
acquainted with all that you do." (Qur'an 4:135)

(d) "The recompense for an injury/is an injury equal thereto (in degree)/but if a person forgives and makes reconciliation,/his reward is due from God,/for God loves
not those who do wrong./But indeed, if any do help and defend themselves/after a wrong done to them,/against such there is no cause of blame./The blame is
only against those who oppress men/with wrongdoing and insolently transgress/beyond bounds through theland,/defying right and justice./For such there will be
a penalty grievous (in the Hereafter)./But indeed, if any show patience and forgive,/that would truly be an affair of great resolution." (Qur'an 42:40-43)

(e) "Goodness and evil are not equal./Repel evil with what is better./Then that person with whom there was hatred,/may become your intimate friend!/And no one will
be granted such goodness/except those who exercise patience and self-restraint,nonebut people of the greatest good fortune." (Qur'an 41:34-35)

The website concludes thus: "Any verse that is quoted out of context misses the whole point of the message of the Qur'an. Nowhere in the Qur'an can be found support for indiscriminate slaughter, the killing of non-combatants or murder of innocent persons in 'payback' for another people's alleged crimes. The Islamic teachings on this subject can be summed up in the following verses (Qur'an 60:7-8):"It may be that God will grant love (and friendship) between you and those whom ye (now) hold as enemies. For God has power (over all things), and God is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.God does not forbid you, with regard to those who fight you not for (your) faith nor drive you out of your homes, from dealing kindly and justly with them: for God loves those who are just."

And what about the suicide bombers who lined their bodies with sticks of dynamites and detonate themselves in crowded places with or without the use ofvehicles? What does the "normal" Islamic community have to say about them? They appear to want to stress that even Muslims in their fight must not transgress the bounds of civilized limits and that violence must be proportionate: ""And fight in the way of Allah those who fight you. But do not transgress limits. Truly Allah loves not the
transgressors."  (Qur'an 2: 190). Their website says this: "The dangerous escalation of violence in the world is disturbing to all people of conscience, from September 11 to the Middle East battles, and other random acts of violence perpetrated at innocent civilians." They stress that suicide is forbidden e.g. "O ye who believe!... [do not] kill yourselves, for truly Allah has been to you Most Merciful.  If any do that in rancour and injustice, soon shall We cast him into the fire..." (Qur'an 4:29-30), that killing is must be justified by good reasons e.g. the death penalty for murder but think that forgiveness is better:" "Nor take life - which Allah has made sacred - except for just cause..." (Qur'an 17:33)  In pre-Islamic Arabia, it was usual that the victim's tribe would retaliate against the entire tribe of the
murderer in an endless series of "blood vendetta". Muhammad prohibited this. He said: "Believers, retribution is prescribed for you in cases of murder: the free man for the free man, the slave for the slave, the female for the female. If the offender is granted some remission by the heir of the slain person, the agreed penalty should be equitably exacted and should be discharged in a handsome manner. This is an alleviation from your Lord and an act of grace. He who transgresses after this shall have a painful punishment." (Qur'an 2: 178-179). Their position is that "no matter what wrong we perceive as being done against us, we may not lash out against an entire population of people.....Harming innocent bystanders, even in times of war, was forbidden by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).  This
includes women, children, noncombatant bystanders, and even trees and crops.  Nothing is to be harmed unless the person or thing is actively engaged in an assault against Muslims." For them,"The blame is only against those who oppress men with wrongdoing and insolently transgress beyond bounds through the land, defying right and justice. For such there will be a chastisement grievous (in the Hereafter)" (Qur'an:42:42). They say that in the fight against terrorism of all forms, "it is important to understand who or what is our enemy.  We can only fight against this horror if we understand its causes and motivations.  What motivates a person to lash out in this violent, inhumane way? ...religion neither causes nor explains suicide terrorism. The true motivation of such attacks is something that all of us -- mental health professionals, politicians, and common people -- need to understand, so that we can address the issues more honestly, prevent more violence, and find ways to work towards lasting peace."  They think that "the predominant theme in the Qur'an is forgiveness and peace.  Allah (God) is Merciful and Forgiving, and seeks that in His followers." They quote the Qur'an: "O ye who believe!  Remain steadfast for Allah, bearing witness to justice.  Do not allow your hatred for others make you swerve to wrongdoing and turn you away from justice.  Be just; that is closer to true piety."(Qur'an 5:8)

We have enough violence in this world already: physical violence, verbal violence, psychological violence, violence by family members against each other, violence between brothers and sisters, parents and children, colleagues, business competitors, people of different races, cultures, religions and violence between nations, based on our greed for fame, for wealth, for power in the pursuit of which we think we are justified to employ it purportedly in "self-defense"or "legitimate" advancement of our own selfish interest . It has certainly transgressed all reasonable limits when nations and terrorists think of "defense" in terms of so-called "preventive strikes" or "holy wars”. Politicians and terrorists may like to play verbal games and use "euphemisms" to disguise the true nature of their aggressive acts, but they cannot be more wrong if they truly think that the people can thereby be "fooled"!

A Few Common Misconceptions About Islam.2

Although there are many Pakistani watchmen and businessmen and many Indonesian domestic helpers in Hong Kong, not really many Chinese understand what Islamic beliefs and practices are. As a result, there are a great many popular misconceptions about this world religion. According to the About. Islam. Com, an organization dedicated to promoting a more balanced understanding of what Islam is all about, there are about 10 such misconceptions or myths about Islam.

1. That Muslims worship a moon god.

Some non-Muslims believe that Allah is a purely Arab god whilst others believe that Muslims worship a moon god. They do not, they worship the same God as the Jews, viz. the God of Abraham and except for the fact that they do not believe that God is a trinity or more specifically that Jesus is God the Son but merely one of God's messengers, they believe in the same God as the Christians, with more or less the same kind of attributes e.g omnipotence, omniscience and all merciful, the creator and sustainer of the universe who would judge the living and the dead on the final Judgment Day when every person will be physically resurrected and rewarded or punished for all eternity according to their belief and deeds.

2.  That Muslims do not believe in Jesus.

This again is not true. There are many stories in the Q'uran about the life and teachings of Jesus (called in Arab "Isa") e.g. his miraculous birth, his sermons and the miracles he performed with God's permission and there is even a chapter about Jesus' mother Mary (called "Miriam" in Arab) but they do not believe that Jesus is divine but only one of God's prophets.

3. That most Muslims are Arabs

This is certainly untrue. Although one in five person in the word are Muslims, Arabs only make up just about 15% of the world's Muslim population. The largest Muslim country is in fact Indonesia and other Asian countries which together account for 69% of the total Muslim popular with 27% in Africa and 3% in Europe.

4.That Islam treats its women badly.

Whilst it may be true that many women in the Muslim world are treated badly, the way they are treated relate more to local culture and traditional practices than on the teachings of Islam. Practices like forced or arranged marriage, spousal abuse and
lack of freedom of movement for women are against Islamic law and teachings on the subject. (about this, more later)

5 That Muslims tend to be violent, extremists and terrorists.

In fact, terrorism
cannot be justified under any valid interpretation of the Islamic
faith. The entire Qur'an, taken as a complete text, gives a message of
hope, faith, and peace to a faith community of more than one billion people. The
overwhelming message is that peace is to be found through faith in God,
and justice among fellow human beings. Many conscientious Muslim leaders and scholars do
speak out against terrorism in all its forms and some of them have explained why there is such a twisted picture of the Muslim in the West and within certain Islamic communities.

6. That Islam is intolerant of any other faiths.

This again is not true. Muslims are constantly reminded in the Q'uran that they are not the only ones who worship the God of Abrahmam, that the Christians and the Jews too are "people of the Book" ie. that they have received revelations from the same God worshiped by all of them. The Qur'an also expressly commands Muslims to
protect not only mosques, but also monasteries, synagogues,
and churches -- because "God is worshipped therein.

7.  That Islam promotes "jihad" to spread its faith by the sword and killing all unbelievers

In fact, the word "jihad" is an Arabic word meaning "strive", "effort', "labour" and "fatigue". It refers to an effort to practice religion in the face of oppression and persecution. It refers to fighting the evil in your own heart,
or in standing up to a dictator. Although military action is not excluded, it is to be used only as a last resort and should never be related to "the spread Islam by the sword." ( see post)

8.That the Q'uran was written by Muhammad by copying from Jewish and Christian sources.

According to tradition, the Qur'an was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad over a period of two
decades. It calls upon people to worship One Almighty God and to live their
lives according to this faith. Although it contains many stories about Jewish prophets, it does so only because such prophets also preached the message of God. Such stories came from oral traditions of the people in the Middle East and are not "copied" from the Christian Bible.

9. That Islamic prayers are just a ritualized performance with little meaning

According to Islamic teachings, prayer time is a time for one to stand before God, to renew one's faith, to give thanks for one's blessings, to seek forgiveness and guidance from God. During Islamic prayers, one
is humble, modest, submissive and respectful to God: by bowing and prostrating
on the ground, the Muslim seek to express their utmost humility before the
Almighty.

10.  The crescent moon is a universal symbol of Islam

In fact, early Muslim community did not really have any religious symbols. In the time of the Prophet Muhammad, Islamic caravans and armies flew simple
solid-colored flags (generally black, green, or white) for
identification purposes only. The crescent moon and star symbol actually
pre-dates Islam by several thousand years, and wasn't affiliated with
Islam at all until the Ottoman Empire placed it on their flag.

A Few Common Misconceptions About Islam.1

Onion-shaped domes, slender minarets, spacious mosques with tall carved marble columns and arches, lined with beautiful mosaic tiles in intricate geometric patterns in blue, white and gold standing proudly on dusty ground amidst verdant palm leaves against a clear blue sky, fountains gurgling with clear sparking water, people in long white robes prostrating themselves in deep bows on the ground facing the direction of Mecca on their little prayer mats or carpets or swaying their bodies around in trance-like dervishes in worship, veiled ladies with black hair and heavily made up eyes in diaphanous sarees in red or orange wriggling their wasp-like waists and shaking their shoulders in snake-like movements to the rhythm of music from tablas and tambourines which seem to repeat themselves in never ending motifs whose end only means the beginning of a new cycle of the same, men with white headkerchief tied around their bearded heads with black braided ropes on horseback or on the backs of swaying camels galloping across arid deserts or semi-deserts with sword held high or rifles jumping up and down on their backs and people in white crowded cave-like taverns chatting or laughing in a haze of alcohol against the unsteady light of oil lamps, clinking tiny carved wine glasses in dull red and cloudy yellow, delivering more nuts, dates and barbecued meat tapas but never pork into their big bulging stomachs, drenched in clouds of smoke puffed out from long burnished yellow copper pipes with small water filters like tiny boxes close to their bottoms, whispering intrigues and plotting secretly against unsuspecting victims from the West. It is also said that conquering Muslims would only give Christian crusaders two choices: to believe in Allah or to die. And of course, Muslims are the kind of people who would blow up trains, hijack airliners to ram against the World Trade Tower or the White House, tie dynamites around their bodies which they would detonate in busy supermarkets or schools. They are the kind of people who simply do not care about human lives, people who would stop at nothing in promoting their own religious beliefs. These are the images and ideas which come up to my mind whenever I think about Muslims until I started attending an introductory course on Islam at the mosque in Tsimshatsui, Kowloon. Islam is nothing of the sort. The majority of them condemn the activities of the terrorists in the strongest terms, just like any other decent Christians or Buddhists would do and it hurts them as much as it does the families of the victims. What then is Islam and what did the prophet Mohamed teach Muslims?

The following is a summary of what I have learned about basic Islamic beliefs:

1. Islam the English version of the Arabic words al-'islām . The word "Islam" is a gerund (verbal noun) derived from three roots "s-l-m" which forms a large class of words relating to ideas or concepts about oneness, wholeness, completion, joining together and bonding and in Islamic religion, it means "voluntary submission to God."

2. Muslims believe in one, unique, incomparable Allah, (equivalent of the Christian "God", and the Jewish "God" of Abraham and Moses. He is called "Tanri" in Turkish and "Khoda" in Persian) ) who has no son nor partner. To Muslims, the word "Allah" can be used to refer only to the one true God and the word "Allah" occurred 2700 times in the Qur'an. Even in Aramaic, the language spoken by Jesus, which is a language closely related to Arabic, God is also referred to as "Allah".  Allah is beyond all comprehension and Muslims are not expected to visualize Allah

3. No one has the right to be worshiped but Allah alone. "Did you then think that We had created you in jest (Note: without purpose) and that you would not be returned to Us (Note: in the Hereafter")? So Allah is exalted, the True King. None has the right to be worshiped but Him..." (Qur'an  23: 115-116)  Every other deity is considered false. He alone has the most magnificent and the most sublime and most perfect attributes. In the Q'uran (the Islamic Bible), this is how Allah describes himself: "He is Allah, the One. Allah, the Self-sufficient One. He begets not, nor was He begotten and there is none like Him." ( Qur'an 112: 1-4)

4. Allah is the Almighty, the Creator, ( Qur'an 35:1) the Sovereign and the Sustainer of everything in the universe. He manages everything and is in need of no one, certainly not his creatures, who themselves must depend on Him for all that they need. He did not fight with one of his angels e.g the Devil as stated in the Jewish bible.

5. Allah is all-knowing (He knows what has happened, what will happen and how it will happen), all-seeing and all-hearing.

6. He has power over all things and is able to do all things. He is almighty.  Nothing occurs in the universe but by His will. Whatever he wills, is. Whatever He does not will, is not and will never be.His will is above the will of all His creatures. "He adds to His creation whatever he wills; for Allah has the power to will anything." (Qur'an  35:1)

7. Allah is far removed from all injustice and tyranny.

8. Allah is all wise in all His actions and decrees.

9. If any one wants something from Allah, he/she can ask Allah directly, without having first to go through the intermediary of any one else, including the priests because God is already very close to us. "We created man--We know the promptings of his soul, and are closer to him than his jugular vein." (Qur'an 51:16") . Jesus is not Allah, nor Allah Jesus. Allah has said in the Qur'an : "
Indeed, they have disbelieved who have said: "Allah is the Messiah
(Jesus), son of Mary." The Messiah said, " Children of Israel, worship
Allah, my Lord and your Lord. Whoever associates partners in worship
with Allah has forbidden Paradise for him and is home is the Fire (or
Hell). For the wrongdoers, there will be no helpers."  (Qur'an 5:72)

10. Despite His power and His knowledge, He is most gracious, most merciful and most beneficent. In one of the sayings of the prophet Muhammad , Allah is more merciful to His creatures than a mother to her child. One of the names he is referred to is "Al Rahmān" meaning "The Compassionate" and another is "Al-Rahim" meaning "The Merciful". Allah will answer our prayers for assistance whenever we call upon him. "When My
servants ask you about Me, say that I am near. I respond to the call of
one who calls, whenever he calls to Me: let them, then, respond to Me
and believe in Me, so that they may be rightly guided." (Qur'an 2: 186) "Why do they not turn to God and ask for forgiveness? God is forgiving and merciful." (Qur'an  5: 74)

11. Allah is not a trinity. Allah is a term with no plural or gender used by Muslims. "Indeed, they disbelieve who say, "Allah is the third of three (in a trinity) when there is no Allah but one Allah. If they desist not from what they say, truly, a painful punishment will befall the disbelievers among them. Would they not rather repent to Allah and ask His forgiveness? For Allah is oft-forgiving, most merciful. The Messiah (Jesus) son of Mary, was no more than a messenger.." Q'uran 5: 73-75). Islam rejects the belief that Allah rested on the seventh day after his creation of the world because Islam believes that God can never be weary nor does he ever need to sleep or rest. Similarly it rejects that Allah has ever taken or incarnated Himself in any human form. Such is belief is regarded as blasphemous.

12. Muslims believe in the existence of angels ("malak"),(meaning "messengers") with wings (two, three or four pairs) (Qur'an  35:1) who act as messengers  whom they regard as honored creatures who worship Allah alone, who have no free will and who obey Him and who act only by His command, whose duties include communicating revelations from God to man, glorifying Him, recording whatever is done by man and taking a person's soul away when he dies and may intercede for man. They believe that it was the angel Gabriel who brought the Q'uran to Muhammad, whom they believe to be the last Messenger and prophet of Allah.

13. Muslims believe that Allah has revealed a number of books to mankind for their guidance through his prophets who are His human messengers. Others of his messengers include Noah, Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, Moses and Jesus. But Allah's final message to man, which is a reconfirmation of His eternal message, was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad to whom the angel Gabriel dictated the Qur'an . "Muhammad is not the father of any one of your men, but he is the Messenger of Allah and the last of the prophets..." (Qur'an 33: 40). Allah has guaranteed that the Q'uran is free from corruption or distortion. "Indeed, We have sent down the Q'uran, and surely We will guard it (from corruption) ((Q'uran 15: 9)

14.   Muslims believe in the Day of Judgment when all people will be resurrected for Allah's judgment according to their beliefs and acts. "And those who believe (Note: the belief that "there is no true Allah but Allah and Muhammad is the Messenger (Prophet) of Allah") and do good deeds, they are the dwellers of Paradise, they dwell therein forever." (Qur'an 2:82) . They believe that those who don't believe in Allah etc. or are not Muslims will lose Paradise forever and will be sent to Hell fire. "And whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will not be accepted from him and he will be one of the losers in the hereafter" (Qur'an 3: 85) and "Those who have disbelieved and died in disbelief, the earth full of gold would not be accepted from any of them if it were offered as a random. They will have a painful punishment, and they will have no helpers." (Qur'an 3:91) They also believe that those who believe in and follow the teachings of the Torah and the Gospel will enter heaven. "Of only the People of the Book would believe and be mindful of God, We would surely pardon their sins and We would surely admit them into the Gardens of Bliss. If they had observed the Torah and the Gospel and what was revealed to them from their Lord, they would surely have been nourished from above and from below. There are some among them who are on the right course; but there are many among them who do nothing but evil." (Qur'an  5: 66)

15. Muslims believe that our life on earth is just a short stay and that we are here to be tested. "I created the jinn and mankind only so that they might worship me (Qur'an  51:56) and "He (note: Allah) will say, "how many years did you stay on the earth?" They will say: "We stayed a day or part of a day..." (Qur'an 'uran 23: 112-113).

15.  Muslim believe in Al-Qadar (Divine Predestination) which however does not mean that man does not have free will to do what is right or wrong. Because man has free will, he is responsible for his own thoughts and his own actions. What Al-Qadar implies is that: Allah is an omniscient creator: knows everything in the past, present and future; he keeps a record of everything but whatever Allah wills, will happen and whatever He does not will does not happen.

16.  Muslims believe that apart from the Qur'an, there are other secondary sources of their sacred beliefs namely what they call "the sunnah" (what the Prophet Muhammad said, did or approved of) which is comprised of what are called "hadeeths (or hadiths)" , believed to be reliably transmitted reports by the Prophet Muhammad's companions about what he said, did or approved of. Examples of such hadeeths include the following:
   (a) In their love, mercy and kindness of believers to each other, they are like a body such that if any part of it is ill, the whole body shares in its sleeplessness and fever.
   (b) The most perfect believers are those most moral in the way they behave and the best among such believers are those who are best to their wives.
   (c) None of you believe until you love your brother the way you love yourself
   (d) The most Merciful will show mercy to those who show mercy to others on earth.
   (e) Smiling to your brother is a form of charity
   (f)  A good word to others is a form of charity.
   (g) Whoever believes in Allah and in the Last Day (the Day of Judgment) should do good to his neighbor.
   (h) Allah does not judge you according to how you appear and your wealth. He looks at your hearts and looks at your what you did.
   (i)  Pay your worker his wages before his sweat dries.
   (j) A man walking along a path felt very thirsty. Reaching a well, he descended into it, drank his fill and came up. Then he saw a dog with its tongue hanging out, trying to lick mud to quench its thirst. The man said: "This dog is feeling the same thirst that I felt.". So he went down into the well again, filled his shoes with water and gave the dog a drink. So Allah, thanked him and forgave his sins. The Prophet was asked: "Messenger of Allah, are we rewarded for kindness towards animals? He said: "There is a reward for kindness to every living animal or human.

17. The five pillars of Islamic worship are:
     (a) the shahadah (the creed) the words " I testify there are no gods other than God alone and I testify that Muhammad is the Messenger of God", Muslims must repeat this prayer and any one wishing to convert to Islam must recite the same.
     (b) salat or salāh (daily prayers) which must be performed five times a day to focus one's mind on God, express gratitude to God but in practice, it can be very flexible depending on the circumstances. They are recited in Arabic and consists of verses from the Qur'an. It can be done at a smaller private mosque or masjid jāmi (lager collective mosque), which in practice serve not only as places of worship but of study and for meetings.
     (c) zadah or zakāt  (almsgiving) or the giving a fixed portion of accumulated wealth by those who can afford it to help the poor or needy and to help spread Islam. It is considered to be a religious obligation and not a voluntary act of charity because one is regarded as a "trustee" for one's wealth from God, (regarded as God's gifts to one) but apart from the obligatory alms giving, one is encouraged to give voluntarily (sadaqah)
     (d) sawm (fasting) during Ramadan, which must last from dawn to dusk during the month of Ramadan. The purpose of fasting is to encourage a feeling of closeness to God during which Muslims are expected to express gratitude to God, dependence upon Him, atonement for past sins, asking for forgiveness and thinking about those in need. It is not obligatory for certain types of people e.g. pregnant women, the old and sick
     (e) hajj (pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in a lifetime) during the month of Dhu al-Hijjah . Every able-bodied adult who can afford it must do it at least once in his/her lifetime. The ritual includes walking around the Kaaba seven times, touching the black stone if possible and walking or running seven times between Mount Safa and Mount Marvah and symbolically stoning the Devil in Mina

With each talk, I learned a little more about Islam and I begin to understand a little more why it has spread around the world.  According to the Wikipedia, there are about 1.3 to 1.57 billions Muslims in the world now with 80-90% of them being Sunnis and about 10-20% Shias (often written in the Western press as "Shiites") with about 13% of them living in Indonesia, 25% in South Asia (Pakistan), 20% in the Middle East, 15% in Sub-Saharan Africa, about 4% in South East Asian countries and about 2% in Central Asia. it is one of the fastest growing religions in the world.

Hints of Christmas

I know that Christmas is around the corner. But still it's an entirely different matter when you see it right before your eyes. I had to attend to some business in the Times Square area today and got a slight shock when I arrived.

People waiting before a counter at Times Square.Dolls, dolls, dolls everywhere.

Two little army of Barbie dolls inside the hall.

Some rather Chinese looking trees outside.

And another pink tree at the other corner of the square,

Even before 5 p.m., it's already quite crowded.

A huge green doll outside of the Barbie booth on the ground floor.

Young girls had lots of fun posing in the Barbie booths.

Hey, I'm not done!

It's my turn now. Don't I look cute?

I'm not to be outdone too. Look!

Let's do it together. Whoever cares who is Barbie and who Ken!

Now let me do another one!

"Hi, Mary, see how those girls are having fun. Would you like to go in there?" "Yes Mom. But how am I supposed to look in there?", the eyes of the girl seem to be saying.

Dad, is this OK?

I'm from Amoy. Nothing scares me!

Gifts galore hanging from the ceiling.

On the outside, there were many photo booths.  This is the side of one such cubicle.

Here's another one.

A third.

Another tree of metal! Shall we have a metallic X'mas?
