Riusuki Fukahori

Art never ceases to amaze. I recently went to an exhibition. It got one theme and one theme only: goldfish. Goldfish in various tints of orange and of course, gold fish in gold. It came from Japan. The artist was Riusuke Fukahori. From a very young age, he had been fascinated by the shimmering gold of its scales, the graceful softness of its tail and pectoral fins and the ample curves of its body. And it all started at the moment he got his first taste of the delights of "gold fish netting" when he was asked to catch as many as possible of the tiny gold fishes swimming in a bowl or basin a tiny hand held net!

This is the first gold fish.

This is the second

These are gold fishes swimming in the water in a lacquered basin

These are gold fishes in another wooden basin complete with real water plants and the end products of their digestion.

Another gold fish swimming inside a plastic bag

This is how that same goldfish looks from the side. It's thinner than a wafer. It's done on acrylic embedded in layers of resin ! And not just for this goldfish. The goldfishes in the other photos are done the same way!

And finally, a gold fish which lives up to its name! In gold!

  1. Riusuke Fukahori’s three-dimensional goldfish embedded in layers of resin to render it both a painting and a sculptural object is a visual pleasure and wonder. It’s simply awesome!

  4. It will be great if the goldfishes were made of gold.
