Albergue SCM

Macau seems ideally made for pedestrians. Except for busy thoroughfares, its streets are often narrow and paved with cobble stones. After visiting the Memorial House of Sun Yat Sen, I walked to the nearby Albergue SCM (婆仔屋) and passed through many interesting buildings.

This is the modern looking Macau Municipal Library right beside an old historic building and probably built to exactly the same height and painted the same color so as not to break the continuity of the skyline of the urban landscape.

On the way there, I passed by this government building . It 's the office of the Macau heritage.

The corridor outside the office

There was another exhibition of the artefact of old Macau by Chan Tai Pak, an old newspaper editor.

This is the St. José Church

I went in and took a look. This is the statue of St. Judas Tadeu at its entrance.

The statue of another saint, name forgotten. San José?

Flowers for the saint.

The quiet church

One of its windows.

Traffic signs in the street corners, probably blown off their erect position by the recent typhoon.

I went into the Albergue and saw a pottery exhibition by Ardenda Frota, someone who learned pottery in Macau from an old Portuguese lady . He made all kinds of pottery from traditional to very contemporary.

The outer wall of the Albergue, all overgrown with creepers

Creepers growing on the wall of the Albergue.

A lamp outside the Albergue

A pig's snout in the courtyard?

A creeper lamp !

A chair or a piece of environmental art?

Houses close to the Albergue

Another street there

Further up the same street.

A poster for a petition for  a street to be named after Francisco Figuera (1934-2009), architect who took an active part in preserving the historic buildings of Macau and was instrumental to having many such buildings declared world cultural heritage by the UN.

  5. My last visit to Macau was in 1981... going to Guangdong via the custom of Gong pei. It was not too pleasant then. Yet I have heard lots of good thing about Macau over the years. Seeing your photos validated that.
[版主回覆08/16/2012 08:29:17]Macau is a very peculiar place with lots of very well preserved historic buildings.

  6. The quiet church has character of the orient, but I have not been to Macau for a long time.
[版主回覆08/16/2012 15:45:35]It's certainly a church in the amidst the orient environment with some indigenized motifs. Macau may well be worth multiple visits so that one may savor it more fully.
