Yu Guangzhong's Muslin Net

Another poem I translated during my book selling on Sunday morning is Yu's "Muslin Net". Here it is.

Muslin Net

In childhood mid-summer nights,

All childish dreams were costumed in white muslins

Round topped net lightly lowered at an angle

Tiny axial holes of    star clouds

仰望着已經有點催眠                  a bit drowsy already upon their gaze

The dream catching net always so dense

Not allowing a single flight of bloodthirsty killers

--黑衫短劍的夜行者                   --night riders in black shirts and daggers

只好在外面嚶嚶地怨吟              hissing their complaints only out there

卻竦得放進月光和樹影              too agitated to let in moonlight and tree shadows

幾聲怯怯的蟲鳴裏                      wrapped in a few timid hums

一褸禪味的蚊香                          a twirl of zen like mosquito incense smoke

招人入夢,向幻境蜿蜒     drawing people into dreams, zig zagging towards fantasy land

Opening one's eyes

A crimson cloud of fire over half the bed already.

I like the way he reminisces about the times when he was still a child, imagining things within the mosquito net and not waking up until the sun was already high up dyeing half his bed red with its morning light, especially his image of "a crimson cloud of fire", contrasted with the white muslin mosquito net and the way that one falls asleep by gazing too long at something, in this case, the mosquito net, probably, half from boredom and half from fatigue.

You too, don't waste time! But my reminder may be unnecessary!

[版主回覆11/09/2010 09:12:00]Thank you so much for introducing him to me and now for sharing your appreciation of the poem above and of course for helping me to understand a little of the way he thinks and what he had done! Thank you so much. You are always so kind. I don't really know how to repay your kindness. I can only think of one way i.e I shall continue to dig into his poetry and introduce more of what he has written which I find interesting, good or worth sharing. I'll see what chance will bring to me!

  3. Elzorro, you are such a gentleman! What I have shared with you is nothing that I own. Therefore, you need not think about how to repay me. On the contrary, your enjoyment of what I have shared with you is already my biggest reward.
[版主回覆11/09/2010 15:42:00]Your time,  your attention and the trouble of downloading and uploading are valuable, and above all your good kindness are scarce resources too! They cost you a part of the time of your life, which we know is a depletable resource! Not every one in this world will bother to do that! So I shall try harder to find more to share too!

  4. "Muslin net, muskrat love,   Net in the name of love,    Muskrat in the honor of a musketeer,     Love the mosquitoes of bloody love..."   Good evening, my dear old friend !

11/09/2010 20:21:00]That was a very sweet song by the Captain and Tennille. Love the add-on animation. Very skilful indeed. And of course, your "mosquitoes of bloody love"!
