Edith Piaf's "Je ne regrette rien" (愛迪‧琵雅芙 我從不後悔什麼)

If one ever listens to any French songs, it's almost an impossibility not to have heard of one of her legendary singers. She travelled from Paris to all the capitals of Europe and to New York in the new world. She mesmerized everyone with her trembling voice, her gutteral rolling of the French letter "r" in
every word she sang. She started a style of singing which is still imitated even today. She has sold millions of records. She started from the gutter, singing in brothels. She has many lovers. She loved, she endured everything with a kind of attitude best described by the French slang "je m'en fou" (a colloquial French expression meaning more or less "I don't give a damn/shit" ). She loved much. She suffered much. But whatever it was that she did, she did it with all her heart and all her soul. That's also the way she sang. That's why her songs are always so moving. One of the songs she sang late in her life is "Je ne regrette rien" ( 我從不後悔什麼). She grew up in a poor family, her father being a discharged soldier, her mother a street singer who was interested only in exploiting her and her father, a circus man did likewise and sent her to be taken care of by her father's sister who ran a "bordel", a house of pleasure. In a way, her life was also a bit like that of another American jazz diva of all times, Billie Holiday. So from a young age, she had learned to be street-wise. But she was born with a magnificent voice, which was later discovered whilst she was singing in the streets of Paris by a cabaret owner, who groomed her into the most celebrated singer in France and later in all Europe and has since become a French cultural treasure.
